BAGHDAD: In response to allegations of the Holy Quran being desecrated in Denmark, Iraqi security officers on Saturday dispersed roughly 1,000 followers of cleric Moqtada Sadr who attempted to march to Baghdad’s Green Zone containing foreign embassies.

The third alleged mutilation of the Muslim holy book in a month sparked protests, with the prior two incidents in Sweden already causing diplomatic rifts.

Iraqi security forces destroyed two bridges in Baghdad that led to the high-security Green Zone, which is home to the capital’s institutions of government and foreign embassies. After scuffles, the protesters dispersed several hours after trying to force their way in, an unidentified interior ministry official told AFP. Continued protests over the Holy Quran’s defilement

Another security source claimed that police used tear gas and batons to disperse a few protesters who managed to breach the Green Zone and make their way towards the Danish embassy.

Earlier, “the desecration of the holy Quran and the Iraqi flag” in front of the Danish embassy was denounced by the foreign ministry of Iraq.
In another statement, it was stated that “We cannot allow to happen again” what happened at the Swedish embassy. The “full commitment” of Baghdad to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations was reaffirmed.
